1148 Analgesia Prescribing in Acute Surgical Admissions - Dual-Centre Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract Aim Pain is a common presenting complaint of acute surgical inpatients and has great impact on their subjective wellbeing the perception care they receive if not addressed promptly efficiently. It also cause patients’ complaints properly addressed. We set out to evaluate analgesia prescribed locally in accordance with WHO ladder NICE CKS guidelines for mild-to-moderate pain. Method performed cross-sectional studies adults aged 16 over, admitted under general or vascular surgery two DGHs (2018-2020) pain admission. 30 patients were included both an average age 53/56 years. undertook notes review, checked observation charts drug grading prescribing following initial clinical assessment. Results In first study, score 6 was obtained. Only 19/30 (63%) had regular prescribed. 2/30 (6%) started weak opioids, further 8/30 (26%) as required/PRN opioids. 17/30 (56%) PRN Oramorph NSAIDs despite only 46% having cautions/contraindications. 5/30 scores 9-10 any Comparable results achieved second hospital we audited. Conclusions This study shows significant under-prescribing analgesia, especially moderate-severe skipping weaker opioids/NSAIDs favour Oramorph. There scope improvement educational session implementation junior doctors.
